Overview

The IoT smart-seating layer of the Kiasu Hawker platform, built for the Samsung Solve For Tomorrow 2022 competition where the digitalised hawker platform earned 1st Runner-Up (2nd nationally). It tackles seating availability and safety in crowded hawker centres with real-time seat monitoring.

Competition Context

This system was the hardware backbone of an end-to-end hawker ecosystem — combining a customer Android app, a React web platform, a Laravel API, and sensor telemetry — created to modernise Singapore's hawker centres and recognised among the top entries nationally (Samsung Newsroom).

How It Works

ESP32 microcontrollers paired with environmental sensors detect seat occupancy and transmit telemetry, orchestrated through Node-RED, directly into a cloud SQL database. The mobile apps read this live data to guide diners to available seats, easing congestion during peak hours.
